CAC Education Fund to sponsor town meetings on campaign finance reform in ten cities this summer

The Citizens Action Coalition Education Fund, the education and research affiliate of the Citizens Action Coalition of Indiana, has received funding from the Joyce Foundation to conduct an 18-month education and research project on state level campaign finance reform.

The goal of the project is to build a large and diverse grassroots network of individuals and organizations who will engage the Indiana General Assembly in a productive dialogue on the issue, resulting in reform legislation to diminish the importance of big money in Indiana elections.

The project staff has been busy traveling across the state meeting with community leaders, legislative candidates and the media to garner support for the project and its activities and to raise the level of awareness of the issue.

We are also putting the finishing touches on a survey which will seek to measure not only the public’s support for various reform measures but also the degree to which big money in the political process leads to apathy and cynicism and what changes need to be made to bring people back into politics and the policy making process.

This survey will be conducted by the Public Opinion Laboratory at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and will involve not only those contacted by random telephone calling but also the attendees at the public meetings.

A major focus of the project is a series of town meetings in ten cities across the state designed to educate the public about campaign finance at the state level and to seek citizen input on what reforms citizens believe will address their concerns.

Listed here are the first round of public hearings. All CAC members are strongly encouraged to attend these briefings because all CAC issues are impacted by big money in the political process.
