Increased scrutiny on Leucadia's proposed coal gasification plant in Rockport, IN has resulted in an interesting decision by an Indiana court, and hopefully a second look by state legislators. 

"After a recent ruling by the Indiana Court of Appeals blocking a synthetic natural gas contract on a technicality, consumer groups are calling on the legislature to repeal the deal entirely.

Some people love to say that “coal is cheap,” and they used to be right.  However, the cost of coal itself increased 400% from 2003 to 2008.  In 2008, Duke Energy spent $190 million more on coal than they did in 2007.  The price has dropped since the economic crisis, but continued price volatility is expected going forward.

Energy efficiency is simply using off the shelf technology to use energy more efficiently.  This includes upgrading to more efficient furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters, and other appliances.  It also includes insulating homes better, installing more efficient windows, and simple things like using compact fluorescent light bulbs and weatherstripping around doors and windows.
