CAC's Letter to Evan Bayh regarding Federal Energy policy

Body:

To the office of Senator Evan Bayh:

Dear Senator Evan Bayh,

When it became apparent in May and June that the United States Congress was more inclined to cater to industry rather than solve our climate and economic crises, the Citizen’s Action Coalition of Indiana, our members, and concerned citizens of Indiana began sending postcards and calling your offices. On August 14, 2009, we received a letter of response which expressed your concern about the threat posed by global climate change.

While we share that concern, you are yet to respond to our specific inquires to support legislation that will:

  • Eliminate subsidies for coal and nuclear power, and shift these dollars towards R&D and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
  • Establish a national Renewable Electricity Standard of 25% by 2025.
  • Establish an Energy Efficiency Resource Standard of 15% by 2020.
  • Establish a REAL moratorium on new coal and new nuclear power plants.
  • Allow EPA authority to regulate carbon dioxide emissions from stationary sources.

Renewable energy and energy efficiency policies are the least-cost approach compared to business as usual technologies of coal and nuclear electricity generation. That notion has been expressed now, via postcard, by more than 15,000 of your constituents. The Citizen’s Action Coalition of Indiana, our members, and concerned citizens alike are asking you to address these issues in writing.

Sincerely,

CAC, our members, and concerned citizens of Indiana.
