CenterPoint Electric Rate Hike (2022)

On 6/28/22, the IURC approved CenterPoint’s request to build two new fossil gas power plants, raising monthly electric bills for residential customers by an average of $23 per month. The actual impact is likely to be even higher due to inflation and rising natural gas costs.

About the Rate Hike:

CenterPoint Energy already has the highest electric rates in Indiana. Now they’re at the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) demanding another $323 million from customers to build two dirty and unnecessary gas plants in Cause Number 45564.

 

To make matters worse, CenterPoint states that these proposed gas plants will operate only 2-5% of the year.

 

This increase would raise your bills by $23 a month. Hoosier households already face declining and stagnant wages and significant increases in the cost of housing, health care, and energy. Enough is enough!

 

CenterPoint is once again prioritizing corporate profits over people and ignoring the climate crisis. CenterPoint should be investing in cleaner and cheaper alternatives, like energy efficiency and renewable energy, rather than more fossil fuels which only promise more pollution and higher monthly bills.

 

Fight back against monopoly utility greed. Tell the Office of Utility Consumer Counselor (OUCC) to stand up for Hoosier Consumers by:

  • Opposing CenterPoint's request to hike your rates for unnecessary gas plants
  • Supporting investments in community solar, energy efficiency, and demand response

 

Tell the OUCC to fight for residential customers to ensure that monthly bills are affordable, just, and reasonable.
