INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday July 31st, Duke Energy Indiana once again reported to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) that the Edwardsport Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power plant generated zero electricity using coal for June 2023. Duke Energy Indiana had also previously reported zero electricity generation from coal for the months of April and May of this year. Despite this, Duke Energy Indiana has indicated that they intend to continue to run the $4 billion Edwardsport IGCC on coal until 2034.
“Duke Energy Indiana’s expensive obsession with this unreliable coal contraption is costing Hoosier families big on our energy bills, yet it hasn’t worked in months” said Ben Inskeep, Program Director at CAC. “Duke should stop delaying the transition to proven, affordable clean and distributed energy solutions that are needed to allow our communities to prosper and thrive.”
Meanwhile, Duke Energy Indiana captive ratepayers continue to get gouged on their monthly electric bills for all the costs associated with the failing Edwardsport IGCC fiasco, including significant profits being delivered upstream to the energy holding company behemoth that is Duke Energy located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“It is long past time for Duke Energy to do the right thing for their customers and shut down the Edwardsport IGCC immediately,” said Kerwin Olson, Executive Director at CAC. “Consumers have been paying too high of a price for this gold-plated science experiment for far too long. Cheaper and cleaner alternatives exist today. Hoosier ratepayers are struggling with an affordability crisis and simply cannot continue to foot the bill for this failed project.”
The reports by Duke Energy are filed in IURC Cause No. 43114-S1 and are also available at the links below.
