CenterPoint Electric wants another $454 million from customers
CenterPoint filed to raise electric bills yet again.
In May 2023, CenterPoint filed Cause Number 45894, asking the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) for another $454 million for their transmission & distribution system. If approved, CenterPoint’s request will result in a $14.68 monthly increase by 2028 for the average customer.
CenterPoint is proposing to charge customers for this increase through:
- A fixed monthly charge which will increase to $9.08 by 2028
- A volumetric rate based on your usage which will increase to $5.60 by 2028 for a household using 1,000 kWhs per month
Quick facts about this case:
- High fixed monthly charges make it harder to control your electric bill and disproportionately impact low electricity users. Read more here.
- The Indiana General Assembly gave utilities a blank check for transmission and distribution through legislation passed in 2013 & 2019. Read more here.
In August 2023, CAC filed testimony (PDF download) recommending the IURC scrutinize the TDSIC Plan to ensure its proposals are reasonable, including claims about the benefits related to distributed generation. CAC further recommended that the IURC deny the proposal for TDSIC Plan cost recovery of distribution system investments through a fixed charge on residential and small commercial customers.
