Indiana's electric and gas utilities have the unique privilege of being monopolies, which means they are shielded from competition. In exchange for this privilege, investor-owned utilities are regulated by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC).
In May 2023, CenterPoint filed Cause Number 45894, asking the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) for another $454 million for their transmission & distribution system. If approved, CenterPoint’s request will result in a $14.68 monthly increase by 2028 for the average customer.
Indiana has more toxic coal ash ponds and landfills than any other state. Most of them threaten important bodies of water, such as Lake Michigan and the Ohio, Wabash, and White Rivers.
If approved by the IURC, the average CenterPoint residential customer electric bill will increase by $13.20 for the months of February, March, and April of 2023, according to CenterPoint’s filing.
